--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Sir/Madam,
The ongoing guerrilla war between Kashmiri freedom-fighters and
the Indian Army high up in the Kashmiri mountains has again
turned the world's attention to this area of the world.
Sadly, however, the recent reports and features in mass media
have strongly favored one part in the conflict, namely India, and
not presented the Kashmiri people's version of the situation.
Let me remind you that the reason for this conflict lies in the
fact that India is denying the Kashmiri people their right to
self-determination although it was promised them initially by the
Indians themselves: "If, after a proper plebiscite, the
people of Kashmir said, 'we do not want to be with India'; we are
committed to accept it though it might pain us. We will not send
an army against them. We will accept that however hurt we might
feel about it. We will change the constitution, if
necessary" (Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's
statement in the Indian Parliament, June 26, 1952).
India has for the past 50 years ignored the UN Security Council
Resolution regarding the plebiscite in Kashmir. It has also made
a mockery out of the first clause of the Shimla agreement of 1972
between the two countries, India and Pakistan, which states:
"(i) That the principles and purposes of the Charter of the
United Nations shall govern the relations between the two
countries."
Also, just since 1988 the 700 000 plus Indian troops stationed in
Kashmir have tortured and killed civilians, raped Kashmiri women,
looted and burnt down houses, businesses, schools, and places of
worship. According to conservative estimates at least 80 000
civilian Kashmiris have been killed since 1988 by the Indian
forces.
The armed struggle of the Kashmiri people is a result of their
desire to be able to determine their future status through a UN
monitored plebiscite. Why is India denying the Kashmiri people
this basic human right?
I sincerely hope that presented with the above-mentioned facts
you will speak up for the Kashmiri people and inform the general
public about the true picture of the ongoing Genocide of the
Kashmiri people at the hand of the Indian forces currently
occupying Kashmir.
Sincerely Yours,
